Need assistance paying your property taxes? Apply for the Homeowners Property Tax Assistance Program (HPTAP)
The current public health crisis with COVID-19, can make it even harder to make ends meet. If you’re having difficulty paying your property taxes, you may qualify for the City of Detroit’s Homeowners Property Tax Assistance Program (HPTAP), also known as a Property Tax Exemption (PTE). This citywide program can reduce or eliminate your current year’s property taxes, if your household is low-income or is facing a financial hardship.
JEI provides Detroit homeowners with free one-on-one assistance in completing their HPTAP application. Even if you have been approved for this program in previous years, you must re-apply annually in order to receive the exemption. The assistance we provide includes access to printers, notaries, and trained staff to help alleviate the stress of the often overwhelming application process.
Approvals for the HPTAP are made by the Detroit Board of Review on an on-going basis. If your application is approved by May 1st, the exemption will appear on the City of Detroit’s 2020 Summer Tax Bill. If your application is approved after May 1st, you will receive an adjustment tax bill from the City of Detroit Office of the Treasury which will reflect the exemption.
At this time, JEI is assisting residents by phone 313.314.6414, mail, and e-mail: neighborhoodsvcshub@jeffersoneast.org.
