Last Chance! Detroit Property Tax Exemption Application Deadline is December 9th

Our final Property Tax Exemption (PTE) workshop has passed, however it's not too late to apply for assistance! The deadline is December 9, 2019 to submit your application.

Based on income eligibility OR a hardship, this City of Detroit program can partially or fully eliminate your current year’s property taxes! We are still available to assist you! Contact our Housing and Neighborhood Services team at 313-331-7939 ext 1 to schedule an appointment.

There are a few additional free workshops being held around the city. Call 211 or text "Home" to 85274 for information. There will be counselors on hand to provide one-on-one assistance with completing the application.

Homeowners seeking assistance must bring certain documents required for the exemption application:

  • A Copy of recorded proof of home ownership (Ex: deed, land contract, court order, divorce settlement, etc.)

  • Current ID for all adults over 18 years

  • Recent report card, transcript, or other document that includes address for all minors under 18 years.

  • 2018 Federal & State tax returns for all adults, if filed.

  • Proof of income for everyone over 18 years (W2’s, pay stubs, SSI/SSD, food stamps, FIA/DHS, child support, self-employment, signed letter from anyone who is helping you financially, pension, etc.)

  • Proof of expenses or debts, if household income is over the income guidelines (Ex: all pages of utility bills, tax payment plan, medical bills, credit cards/loans, insurance bills, phone/cable/internet bills, etc.)

  • Proof of assets (bank statements, 401k, insurance settlement, etc.)
