Driving Development in the Neighborhoods

JEI is committed to developing work for Detroiters and reducing barriers to small business growth and expansion.

Supporting Small Business & Real Estate Development

Our Economic Development team supports small business owners seeking to establish their first brick-and-mortar retail business or small businesses that want to expand their presence in Detroit’s east Jefferson neighborhoods through proper advice and investment knowledge. We also match tenants to available land owners and provide valuable information on all of the steps, including homeowners insurance.

Small businesses play a major role in every community as they help keep communities memorable by adding charm and character. Small businesses help create strong communities by providing new job opportunities for residents.

We understand the importance of focusing attention on what small business owners need to turn their visions into realities.

Our services include:

  • Tenant and lease support

  • Collaboration and support with our partners including New Economic Initiative (NEI), and many others.

  • Referrals for design services, space planning, signage and marketing support.

  • Business corridor organizing.

The Community Tech Worker (CTW) program is a joint effort between Jefferson East, Inc. and the University of Michigan, designed to bridge the digital divide by providing free 1:1 technology support and training for Detroit small businesses and a path to economic mobility for local community members.

The CTWs conduct  research and advise business owners about digital platforms that best fit their business needs. Tech Workers assist with the set up and use of these tools, troubleshoot issues, and teach business owners how to use the software. CTWs are not free tech support for businesses; they are professionals in-training who teach Detroit business owners how to independently solve their tech issues.

The Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project (DNEP) provides training to residents and U-M students (Community Tech Workers) to provide one-on-one free technology support to Detroit entrepreneurs and small business owners.
