Creating a Clean and Welcoming Environment

Clean and Safe

JEI works to foster services that will drive a positive impact in the neighborhoods along the East Jefferson corridor, empowering residents and business alike as they continue to take action to keep the neighborhoods beautiful and safe.

I come in early every morning to get ready and I see that the trash has already been picked up. I never have to worry about clearing away trash from my storefront because the outside always looks great.

Maintaining a Clean Corridor

JEI keeps the East Jefferson corridor and Rivertown District sidewalks and streets free of debris, brush, and rubble, with high-quality cleaning services that are supported through a relationship with the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP).

We contract with the Block by Block Clean Ambassadors for blight mitigation and solid waste removal, which includes:

  • Maintaining 15 miles of sidewalk and medians

  • Emptying 145 trash cans three times per week

  • Graffiti tag removal

  • In 2023, 93 tons of trash was removed.

Our Ambassadors can add an extra level of value by providing hospitality and safety services motorist assistance such as jump starts, lockouts, flat tires or even directions.

Preventing Crime in the Neighborhoods

JEI works to reduce and prevent crime in partnership with the Detroit Police Department (DPD) and Wayne State University’s Center of Urban Studies to help address and carefully monitor crime trends.

We work with community stakeholders to increase public safety in the corridor each year.

  • Monthly community CompStat meetings -for the 5th and 7th precincts- to discuss and strategize around community policing and safety.

  • Deployment of the JEI AmeriCorps Urban Safety Team – a program designed to empower Detroit residents and businesses with crime reduction tools and strategies.

    • Business and home safety assessments

    • Free target hardening device distribution to promote vehicle safety

      • Car Clubs

      • Wheel Locks

      • Vin Etching

To schedule your safety assessment, or an appointment to secure wheel locks, vin etching or get a car club to secure your vehicle, please contact:

Domestic and Intimate Partner Abuse Prevention and Support

In the heart of our communities, we face the ongoing challenge of domestic and intimate partner violence (DIPV). In partnership with the AmeriCorps Detroit Urban Safety (AMUS) program and Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Studies, we’ve crafted a dedicated response that combines empathy with determination.

JEI funds the placement of two Domestic Violence Advocates (DVAs) - stationed in the 5th and 7th precincts. Our DVAs offer the following support for DIPV survivors:

  • Developing personalized safety plans

  • Petitions for personal protection orders (PPOs)

  • Connections to other supportive services, such as counseling, shelter and other community connections
